Rotation Model logoAt First United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, our approach to Sunday school, grows disciples of Jesus!

By making use of the innovative Workshop Rotation Model.
Children from preschool to 5th grade (we call them Cool Disciples) learn about the same Bible story for several weeks in a row. We call this Bible story a Rotation. Each week, a group of kids are assigned to a different classroom, which we call a Workshop.

Over the course of a Rotation, the kids “rotate” through these unconventional Workshops — Cooking, Art, Video, Games — exploring the story using different learning styles: visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, to name a few. Creative repetition of a lesson leads to improved Bible Literacy. We can dig deep into a story so our learning is transformative. We see how the Bible applies to our lives!

The burning bushIn January and February we are learning about Moses, an important Old Testament character. Last month we covered Moses’ birth and his float among bulrushes in a baby-sized basket, all the way to his burning bush experience as an adult.

Review this portion of the story in Exodus 1:1 – 4:17. Use the free reading plan with discussion questions to break the story down into chewable chunks.

Our current Rotation for February continues our story…

Moses: Plagues to Passover

As we will see, freeing the Hebrews from Pharaoh’s grip is not an easy task. It involves frogs, and gnats, and flies! And a mysterious “passing over” with protection provided by the blood of a lamb. Read about our story in Exodus 5:1-6:13, 7:1-12:42. Here is another reading plan. Read a bit every night at the dinner table or wherever you gather.

What’s happening in each workshop?

  • Cooking: Students will make unleavened bread and discuss the Passover and the Israelites’ hasty departure from Egypt.
  • Games: Kids will participate in a Bible Bowling game as they learn story characters, events and story sequence. Which team will win – the Gnats, or the Flies, or the Frogs?.
  • Video: We will watch portions of the animated video The Prince of Eygpt. I wonder how closely the creators of this video follow the story as told in the Bible?
