Standing Strong with Prayer: VBC Day 3

Welcome back — day three of Kingdom Rock Vacation Bible Camp (VBC) at FUMC, where kids stand strong for God!

At our opening time, Sing & Play Rock, we were rocking the castle! Singing and moving to the music. How did the rest of our morning go? Great!

Opening: Sing and Play Rock - Wednesday

But first, a few links and other items of interest:

  • See what we did on Monday and Tuesday at Kingdom Rock.
  • Help your kids be on the look-out for “God Sightings” — noticing God at work in your world. (The beauty of “God Sightings” is, once you start noticing, you see God a lot more!)
  • An item for your calendar: We will be singing two songs during worship this Sunday, so please join us at 9:30 and wear your VBC T-shirt!
  • Keep those cereal boxes and coins coming! Neighbors near and far thank you!

Now, what else happened today? Well, Wally was on the run. She was taking flight from a knight in shining armor named Pistachio! Pistachio is big bully! I wonder how this will unfold?

Wednesday's Bible Buddy: Swift

Speaking of getting away fast, we watched a short video that introduced our very fast Bible Buddy of the day, Swift. Swift is a falcon. Did you know that falcons are the fastest birds around? They can fly at the speed of 200 miles a hour! (Can you imagine how fast your family car would have to travel to get from Ann Arbor to Chicago in just one hour? Pretty fast.)

Swift introduced our Bible Verse of the day:

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about
everything.Philippians 4:6

This would be a good Bible verse to “store in our heart” where we can pull it up, just when we need it? Visit here for some hints about “memorizing” Bible verses. Pray about everything! Yep; good advice.

It turns out that prayer was today’s Bible Point:

Prayer helps us stand strong.

Prayer is talked about a lot in the Bible. In our story for today, Nehemiah persevered to rebuild the wall around his favorite city, Jerusalem (as told in Nehemiah 1–6). He prayed a lot to God for help. And God listened!

Our preschoolers were busy with…

  • Games – Played two games: one where they helped build a wall, just like Nehemiah. The second game used bubbles; it was called “Blown Away.” Can you blow away your concerns in prayer to God?
  • Drama/Bible Adventures – We learned about how it can be difficult to rebuild a wall when the people around you are making it difficult to do your work. We heard about how hard it was for Nehemiah.
Preschool Bible Adventures: Knocking down the walls of Jerusalem Building the wall in record time
  • Chadder’s Theater – We watched another episode of Chadder. Is Chadder in trouble for helping make the movie? Then we played a game called “Falcon Freeze.”
Preschool Chadder's Theater; we play a game called Falcon's Freeze Caring helpers
  • Crafts – We made a prayer wall.
Creating our prayer wall Creating our prayer wall

It took a lot of work but it reminded us of all the things that we can pray to God about; big things AND little things.

Showing off our prayer wall creation prayer wall

Elementary kids visited the following stations…

  • Epic Bible Adventures
Wall repair at Epic Bible Adventures

“Jerusalem” was a mess! The wall had been knocked down. We learned about how Nehemiah felt when he heard that his beloved city was in trouble. We also learned how he constantly turned to prayer. Then we helped rebuild the wall in record time!

  • Tournament Games – “Noodle Jousting,” “Knights in Knots”… what next? (But what fun!)
  • Chadder’s Royal Theatre & Missions – Chadder’s stunt did not go well. Everyone was mad! Chadder was worried. I wonder what will happen!?
  • Imagination Station – There were lots of surprises in store for us today! A very difficult experiment with forks and a toothpick and a match… Catching bubbles with our hands… God sometimes surprises us in how he answers our prayers.
Surprises at Imagination Station We try it ourselves

What about the Grad Group? Our “older” elementary kids are working every day this week on various mission projects.

A Grad Group member helps lead kids into the castle Grads at work preparing snack

They helped out here at VBC, delivering kids to their crews in the morning and delivering coffees to our volunteers! Today they also made Rice Krispie Treats to take to the Bryant Community Center’s summer camp program. Kids at camp are fed lunch AND dinner every day during the program. What a great treat to share with our neighbors.

On the menu at King's Kitchen

At The King’s Kitchen we were served a treat called “Prayer Mix.” It looked like normal trial mix, but in this case each ingredient had a special meaning! Next time twisted pretzels are served, I bet your kids will think of how the shape looks like praying hands. Ask your kids what some of the other snack pieces represented.

At the end of our morning everyone gathered together again for Fanfare Finale for more singing!

Fanfare Finale Audience is also involved

But what is wrong with Lady Adele? Why does she seem to be dragging a heavy weight? What? People keep giving her more work!

Look at the train of stuff she's pulling along She is encouraged to pray to lighten her load

We convince Lady Adele to give up her concerns to God in prayer. We help her to unburden her load. She is very grateful!

Continue the learning at home!

Here are a couple of questions to talk about around the family dinner table:

  • We can pray at any time. When is your favorite time to pray?
  • We often pray when we are worried. What is something that worries you? How can prayer help you deal with that worry?
  • Do you suppose that there is anything that you might pray for that God doesn’t really care about? (the answer: NO!)

See you tomorrow!

Sing and Play Rock - day 2

At our opening time, Sing & Play Rock, we got right down to business – singing Kingdom Rock songs with gusto!

Wally in workout attire Wally attempts to lift a heavy shield
Tuesday's Bible Buddy: Duke the horse

Wally was back – in sweaty exercise attire! What’s up with that? She was working out, in order to become strong!

It looks like she’s got a long way to go. She needs some help getting in shape; she could barely lift a shield. I wonder what she’ll do?

We also met today’s Bible Buddy, Duke. (That’s Duke on the right.) Duke is a jousting horse. Jousting is a sport; something knights do with big spears and heavy armor. No wonder Wally was working out. Becoming a knight is tough work!

I wonder how a big horse relates to today’s Bible Point. See if your kids know.

What was today’s Bible Point? (So glad you asked!)

Family and friends help us stand strong!!

As always, our key Bible verse applies to the concept:

So encourage each other and build each other up.
 (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

So encouraging one another is one way to help our friends and family stand strong!

Our sneak peak at today’s Bible adventure came from a clue in our hidden helmet. (How does that helmet always seem to disappear every day?) Our clue tells us that our Bible story is about Esther. She’s the one that has an entire book of the Old Testament that tells her story! We’ll learn more, I’m sure.

Today the preschoolers did the following…

  • Games – Today we played “Parachute Pals” and “Helping Tag.” What fun!
Preschool Games
  • Drama/Bible Adventures – We got to play different roles in the story of brave Queen Esther. I wonder what role involved making noise with drums?
Preschool Bible Adventures Pre-school Crafts - decorating friends & family
  • Crafts – We created ‘fridge art to represent family and friends who help us stand strong.
  • Chadder’s Theater – We watched another episode of our video. Chadder and Joey discover who was stealing the palace treasures! But now Chadder is in another fix!

Elementary kids visited the following stations…

  • Epic Bible Adventures – We met Queen Esther and heard about her plight. We also had a chance to peek into the royal throne room and we encouraged Queen Esther to stand strong.
meeting Esther from the Bible Peeking into the throne room

At Bible Adventures is where we receive the day’s wrist band. Have you seen one of these come home with your child? Take note of the QR Code that takes you to a fun spot on the web. There’s lots of good stuff on those wrist bands.

    Wrist band close-up
  • Tournament Games – We played “Teamwork Pass,” “Lean on Me,” and “Knight Tag.” Believe it or not we do rest a bit.
A tag game out on the lawn Talking time in knee-to-knee circles
  • Chadder’s Royal Theatre & Missions – We watched another episode of our video. Chadder encouraged his friend Joey to do the right thing when they discovered who was stealing the palace treasures!
Chadder Chipmunk Chadder’s the star in the video
  • Imagination Station – We talked about sinking feelings. Then we discovered a way to float instead! Then we tried to build towers from straws. We found that cooperation helped.
Imagination Station - tower building Building towers in Imagination Station

At The King’s Kitchen we quenched our hunger and our thirst with today’s tasty treat: Building Blocks. We could play with our food! Meanwhile, it reminded us to build each other up with our words and our actions; to build relationships with our family and our friends. During our snack time we shared our God Sightings: instances where we saw God at work in our daily life; a smiling face, a pretty sunset, a helping hand… all of these are God’s fingerprints! We’re creating lists of all of our God Sightings.

Today the Grad Group worked on packaging snacks for the LOVE Thy Neighbor program – a local outreach to feed the homeless lunch on Saturdays. They also counted cereal boxes (17!) and money donated for our mission project. $84.77 has been collected so far to help build bathrooms in Liberia!

Grad Group packs snacks A Grad Group member gives an update

Yesterday the Grad Group decorated bags that will be used in church this Saturday and Sunday, to collect a special offering to add to our building bathrooms fund. I’ll bet that at VBC we can raise more!

As our morning drew to a close everyone gathered at Fanfare Finale. Lady Adele helped us review our day. We sang our favorite Kingdom Rock songs about standing strong. We also watched a volunteer stand strong against a “Kingdom-ly Contraption.” What will happen to the knight? I wonder if having friends around him will help?

watch out! This is scary! Friends help him to stand strong

No room for fairy tales at Kingdom Rock VBC! (day one)

No fairy tales this week! Just epic adventures, at Kingdom Rock Vacation Bible Camp (VBC), with kids (and adults!) discovering how to stand strong with God.

First some important stuff for adults:

Each year we choose a VBC mission for kids to support. This year we have two projects:
1. Collecting boxes of cereal for Ann Arbor’s own Bryant Community Center.
2. Collecting coins (or paper money!) so that kids at the Evelyn S. Chapman Memorial United Methodist Elementary School in Monrovia, Liberia, can have bathrooms with flush toilets.
Both offerings can be turned in at the start of VBC each day at the front of the Sanctuary.

Now, here’s what your kids did today…

First we all gathered together in the royal castle Sanctuary…

entrance to the castle

for Sing & Play Rock. We learned our theme song, appropriately titled: “Stand Together.” Hear the tune in a short music video in this post. We had fun learning other new songs, most of them had motions to go along with the tune.

Singing with motions Help with singing

A special clue (which was hidden in a helmet!) gave us a hint about our Bible story. Ask your child to tell you what our passage was and re-read it in the Bible at Psalm 23. (Any time you see highlighted words, you can click on them to be taken to a link, in this case, one where you can read the 23rd Psalm.) King David wrote Psalm 23; he wrote about God’s love. We learned that…

God’s love helps us stand strong!

(We heard that phrase a lot today.) Our key Bible verse for the day fits right in; it’s from another psalm that David wrote:

“I love you, Lord;
you are my strength.”
Psalm 18:1

At Sing & Play Rock we met a couple of interesting characters: Truman and Wally.

Day one Bible Memory Buddie - Truman the Bulldog
Truman

Truman is our Bible Buddy for the day. (That’s him over on the left.) He’ll help us to remember that God’s love helps us stand strong! (Bible Buddies look a lot different this year! Much flatter.)

Wally wants to become a knight but I think that a knight needs to be able to ride a real horse. We will hear from Wally every day this week. I wonder what Wally will do?

What happened next? The preschoolers went off to their special rooms and did the following:

  • Games – Played games such as “Follow the Shepherd,” “Sheep Herding,” and “Where’s the Heart?” They had extra time – great for building castles! a preschooler builds a sand castle
  • Drama/Bible Adventures – Acted like sheep as they explored King David’s description of God’s love in Psalm 23. (King David used to be a shepherd!) In the picture below they learn about “knee-to-knee circles.” Great for talking. At Drama/Bible Adventures
  • Chadder’s Theater – Kids watched a video about Chadder the Chipmunk. What sort of troubles is Chadder into this year? Will he be strong enough to help out his friend Joey by doing movie stunts?
  • Crafts – We made Truman’s Tumblers and Kingdom Crowns.
    Truman's Tumblers Creating at crafts

Meanwhile elementary kids visited the following stations:

  • Epic Bible Adventures – In this station kids get to hear our Bible story in a special way. They rested in a peaceful pasture with King David, traveled to a dark valley and talked about fear and then were anointed with sweet-smelling oil! (Something they did a lot in Bible times.)
  • Tournament Games – which included Round Table Scramble, Rowdy Ring Toss, and Well, Well, Well – an interesting game where some got wet!
    At Tournament Games
  • Chadder’s Royal Theatre & Missions – We watched a video to see if Chadder would be strong enough to do movie stunts to help out Joey, his friend.
  • Imagination Station – Explored using a Truman’s Tumbler. This tumbler needs something inside of it in order to work – a marble. Just like we need God’s love inside of us.

Our “older” elementary kids in our Grad Group are working every day this week on various mission projects – both local and global! More about them as the week progresses.

Mid-way through our time this morning we all gathered at The King’s Kitchen for a yummy snack of Heart Tart’s. We also spent a bit of time getting to know our crews better and recording “God Sightings.”

Our snack from day 1 Discussion while at King's Kitchen

At the end of our morning everyone gathered together again for Fanfare Finale. Lady Adele was there! We sang more Kingdom Rock songs and talked in our Kingdom Crews about our day. We also saw an experiment to discover which balloon would “stand strong.”

  • Where did you see God today?

Discussing Joseph in Egypt, part two

Here’s a daily hint: Spend time GROWing at the dinner table.
Growing as in…

Grace (say a table grace together).
Review the days highs and lows while you eat.
Open the Bible and read just a tiny bit.
Work on applying it to life.

The “work on it” part doesn’t have to be elaborate. It’s all about…

Asking questions or doing activities
that help us to see that the Bible applies to our lives.

So if our current Rotation story is about Joseph in Egypt, how can such a long story—with numerous characters and complex plot twists—be broken down in bite-sized (dinner table-sized) chunks?

Easy! Use the following reading/discussion guide!

Joseph’s brothers arrive in Egypt. Unwittingly they bow down before Joseph! (Genesis 42:6)

Clipart - a girl points out while readingIf you’d like to print out this reading plan/discussion guide, click here.
Need a review? See part one of Joseph in Egypt here. And if you’d like to go even further back, review the discussion guide for Joseph’s “Coat” portion of the story, here.

Read in Genesis Discuss…
42:1-4 Why did Jacob have fears about Benjamin going to Egypt? Kids: Do you suppose that your parents have fears about you going places without them? What can help your parents when they are afraid?
42:5-7 Why do you suppose Joseph pretended to not know his brothers? What would your reaction have been if you were Joseph?
42:8-9 What “dreams” is Joseph talking about? (Hint: Genesis 37:5-11) How do you suppose Joseph is feeling watching his dreams come true!?
42:8-17 Why do you suppose Joseph locked up all of his brothers for three days? Describe a time when you schemed to “get back” at someone who had wronged you. Did you follow through with your plans?
42:18-23 Joseph says he “fears” God (verse 18) meaning he respects God. Where would you put Joseph’s trust-in-God-level at this point in the story? How do you suppose the brothers of Joseph are feeling: upset at their lot in life or sorry about what they did to Joseph?
Where are they on the trust-in-God-meter?
42:24-28

Worried? Time to work on remembering

A boy looks out of a window

When faced with tough times does your trust in God evaporate?

Or do you remember?

Open quote markWhen you cross deep rivers, I will be with you.
Isaiah 43:2a

Do you suppose Joseph had that thought while he was at the bottom of a pit or sold as a slave in Egypt or unfairly placed in jail?

He must have! Because in spite of all of the hard stuff that Joseph experienced, he maintained godly values and he readily shared his gifts with others.

Okay, so how do I get faith like Joseph.

And how can I help my kids to grow their trust in Jesus?

Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Model growing your own faith: Keep a Bible in a well-traveled space in your house. Let your children catch you reading the Bible and praying. Help your child to realize that a journey with Jesus is on-going. There is always something new to learn.
  • Start a family habit: when gathered together around the dinner table or while driving in the car, ask: What has God been teaching you lately? Share your stories of God with you. Hearing stories about how God was with someone can make it easier for us to remember: God is with me in all situations.
  • Re-focus: Use visualization techniques such as placing all their worries in a basket.
  • Commit Bible verses to memory. Look here and here, for ideas on how to learn verses by heart.
  • In times of stress, use breath prayer as a way to sense God’s presence. That link will take you to a how-to which uses an Aramaic word – the language Jesus used. Or try… On inhale: “God,” On exhale: “always here.” The possibilities are endless.

What are other ways that you teach your kids about growing their faith in God?

Wrestling worries

Imagine living like this:

Open quote markPotiphar left everything up to Joseph, and with Joseph there, the only decision he had to make was what he wanted to eat. Genesis 39:6a

I was reading our current Rotation story using Lectio Divina when this passage jumped out at me. Imagine not being concerned about anything, except what you eat! What a life Potiphar led!

Not a single worry.

Except whether to eat figs or grapes.

Crops need planting? No concern, Joseph will handle it.
Supplies need restocking? No problem, Joseph can take care of it.
(I wonder if Joseph did windows?)

Ever wished you could live like that – worry free? I sure have!

What about when your kids worry? How can you help them?
Does it work to say, “Jesus tells us not to worry?” (See Matthew 6:25-34)
Probably not.

Try this: Ask your child to close their eyes and imagine a basket. (Best done at bed time!) Have them imagine a basket on the floor next to their bed. Tell them to give details to their musing. What color basket? What shape and size?

a picture of a field is cut into strips and woven to look like a basket

When they have the image in their mind, ask them to imagine themselves putting their worries into that basket. Help them to form a clear picture of this process. Tell your child that Jesus will take care of the basket. Have them picture handing the basket to Jesus.

Try it out! What are other ways you help your kids not to worry?

Don’t wait for Confirmation class!

Last Sunday we celebrated Confirmation Sunday, the unique worship service where a milestone is reached – our youth affirm the faith of the church as their own!

a youth gets confirmed
Pastors & parents place their hands on a kneeling youth as she is confirmed.

Nineteen youth became professing members. Among their assertions…

They said, I do to:

  • a rejection of all evil,
  • regret for their sin,
  • confession of Jesus Christ as their Savior.

And I will to:

  • serving as Christ’s representative in the world,
  • and faithfully participating in the ministries of the church.

How did they get to this milestone in their faith journey?

How did they come to this powerful, public pronouncement?

Was it the spent weeks in Confirmation class, learning everything there is to know about the Christian faith.

Well, I’m hoping that we didn’t pin all of our hopes on a few months of classes! Or even a few years of Sunday school. It takes more than that.

Their faith will stick won’t it?

Well we can’t be sure. It is between God and each individual, but you can up the odds.

Don’t do like I did. Don’t leave the religious teaching to the “experts” at church. Don’t be hampered by your own lack of understanding (who am I to teach??) Don’t wait for Confirmation class to start the journey.

Here are a few basic examples of what you can do for your kids now:
Their age (roughly) Your words Your actions
Birth “God loves you” Your care provides a foundation for trust in God.
Toddler “God created all things” Point out all of God’s creation all around them.
Preschooler “The Bible tells us about God and his son, Jesus Christ.” Read Bible stories at home.
“We can talk to God whenever we want and he will listen.” Model and teach about prayer.
And the list goes on…

Don’t wait for Confirmation class!
